History

Candacraig is a unique Scottish retreat nested in the Highlands and is blessed with a rich and vibrant history of Scottish clans. Built in the 17th century, this exclusive venue was enlarged in 1836 in the renowned Scottish Baronial style. The evolution of Candacraig’s distinctive beauty continued through the years all the while improving the mansion while maintaining its characteristic traditional Scottish style.

The Lairdship of Candacraig and surrounds was officially bestowed upon the Anderson family in the year 1620, and the history of the estate was entwined with the family through ten generations to follow. In 1866, ownership of Candacraig was passed to Andrew Wallace, whose own descendants were to maintain stewardship through to 1980.

Much like its distinctive architecture, Candacraig was to develop and deepen throughout the following years. Gordon and Anita Roddick, founders of the globally renowned Bodyshop chain, purchased the estate in 1980, and embarked on a comprehensive programme of improvement. They later sold the rejuvenated Candacraig to comedic icon Sir Billy Connolly and wife Pamela in 1998. In the years that followed Candacraig was to be a hotbed of Hollywood celebrity guests and media attention.

In their time as owners they went on to acquire the Victorian walled garden and courtyard cottages, restoring much of the privacy and exclusive beauty that guests at Candacraig have the pleasure of enjoying today.
In May 2014, current owners Lynne and Marc Lino proudly took over their stewardship of Candacraig, and their own place in the rich history of this exceptional Highland estate. Candacraig opens its doors to visitors from around the world, offering an exclusive opportunity to experience the Scottish Highlands whilst enjoying a private retreat with bespoke/exclusive experiences.
