The Glenlivet and Tomintoul area is one of the best places in the Cairngorms National Park to discover the wonders of the night sky. The best time for star gazing is during the darker months of the year from October to March.

This remote area, a stone's throw from Candacraig, has been awarded the prestigious status of International Dark Sky Park, making it the most northerly Dark Sky Park in the world and among the darkest skies in the UK.

There are 3 Dark Sky Discovery Sites a short drive from Candacraig which provide great views of the night sky, easy parking, and interpretation. However, we don't actually need to leave the grounds of the Castle to enjoy the high quality of our night skies, without any light pollution.

Are you an experienced astronomer, a telescope user or a night time photographer? Candacraig and the area around us offer some of the best night skies in the world.

If you are staying at Candacraig and are new to star gazing or want to learn about the night sky, a member of the Cairngorm Astronomy Group can visit the house and open up the secrets of galaxies, constellations, and planets for you.
